The importance of specialist housing support for people in recovery
In our latest ‘On the Ground’ feature, we talk to Joanne Cudworth, our Central Housing Administrator based in Lancashire. Joanne has been with us since October 2021, coming into the housing service in the midst of major Covid adjustments. When not at work, she is an avid follower of Burnley FC and could be found at away matches all over the country until she recently had her little boy. Below, Joanne tells us about her role and motivation.
Tell us about a typical day
Each day is very different! I mainly assist the Head of Housing and Business Administrators to ensure our properties are maintained to a high-quality, safe standard for residents. I also get involved in searching for new properties to add to our portfolio.
What have you learned about recovery?
I knew a bit about the recovery journey, but I’ve learnt so much more about the hurdles people face. I have seen the difference EF’s help and support makes to people struggling to make changes and how important it is that they know they are not on their own.
What sparked your passion for supporting others?
I worked in the private housing sector for over 20 years and saw first-hand the difficulties faced by people who need additional support with housing. When the opportunity came to work with EF and help provide that specialist assistance, it was a no brainer!
What do you love about your role?
Definitely meeting all the different people. I mainly work behind-the-scenes but I love working across the different offices and meeting staff and residents.
What do you wish you had known before joining EF?
I wish I’d had a better understanding of the process of recovery and how we can help residents with their housing needs.
What have you learnt since working at EF?
I’ve learnt that the stigma people often face on the road to recovery is, in the main, totally unfair. People need some extra help and support but it’s their efforts that make all the difference.
How would you sum up our role?
To support my colleagues to ensure all our residents live in a safe and secure environment where they can thrive.
